Have you had difficult experiences in your childhood that still impact on you now?
Do you find it hard to regulate your emotions?
Do you have a history of depression or anxiety, or chronic and recurrent depression and/or anxiety that hasn’t seemed to change and has been resistant to other forms of intervention (e.g. medication, cognitive behaviour therapy, etc)
If you answered yes to any of these questions schema therapy may be helpful to you.
Schema therapy is an evidence based integrative therapy that helps to address difficulties that often present in long life patterns. It takes into account early life experiences and how these may be impacting on us in our adult lives. Early life experiences may include abuse and neglect, but other experiences in our early lives aren’t so obvious. For example emotional deprivation is a feeling that no one was really there for you, and can lead to lifelong difficulties in relationships and mental wellbeing. Another example is social isolation, where there were circumstances in your life that made you feel socially isolated, or different, which can lead to lifelong feelings of not belonging. If your childhood was filled chaos or stress, or you had a parent that was unwell or absent, these events too can lead to ongoing difficulties in both mental wellbeing and relationships.
If you feel some of this resonates with you, we are most happy to discuss this treatment and assess if this would be a good approach for you.
